Who Qualifies in Ohio?

To qualify, your organization should:

  • Be recognized as a 501(c)(3) by the IRS.
  • Hold an Ohio sales tax exemption certificate or other valid exemption documentation.
  • Use natural gas primarily for exempt nonprofit purposes.

Common qualifying organizations include churches, schools, charitable organizations, and nonprofit healthcare facilities.

How to Become Sales Tax Exempt in Ohio
  • Confirm your organization’s 501(c)(3) status with your IRS determination letter.(Form 1023)
  • Complete for STEC-B found on the Ohio Department of Taxation Website (tax.ohio.gov → Tax Forms → Sales and Use Tax exemption certificates)
  • Provide your exemption documentation to your natural gas supplier so your account can be reviewed and updated where applicable.
Potential Savings

Ohio sales tax rates vary by location. For nonprofits with meaningful monthly usage, even a modest tax adjustment can translate into meaningful annual savings on natural gas expenses.
